Fits together trillions of WRONG ways,
but only one RIGHT way.
Sam Savage, who has a doctorate in computer science from Yale University, will put mathematical theory on hold to make a pitch on TV for a puzzle called Shmuzzle.
The jigsaw puzzle, which Savage designed, is a set of salamander-shaped pieces precisely identical that fit together at the head, leg or tail. The possibilities are endless (more than 87 billion) but only one way will yield the puzzle's image.
The trick is mathematical, a principle called tessellation in which shapes can repeat themselves and endlessly fit into each other with no space between.
