And what's so surprising about that? When you compare the two you can see right away that Barack Obama is clearly the better candidate... for a crossword puzzle entry. And just in case anyone is wondering why Obama is so much more popular than McCain, crossword constructors love vowel-rich words.
Look at the name "Barack Obama". It has a vowel-to-consonant ratio that is slightly over 45% combined with user-friendly B's, an R, an M, and topped off by a high-value K. The only negative, in an otherwise blemish-free combo, is, perhaps, the C, which is far outweighed by the positive.
On the other hand, poor John has two C's and consecutive ones at that. Not to mention a J and only three vowels out of ten letters for a paltry 30% vowel-to-consonant ratio.
So, you're more likely to see Barack Obama's name in a crossword puzzle than John McCain's. And if Barack should become president the odds increase exponentially.
"Obama" has appeared 16 times in American newspaper crossword puzzles.

"McCain" has never appeared in a major newspaper crossword puzzle.

For the change we need. That’s what Obama says, what a LIAR! McCain should say that instead,then it would be true. Obama will lead our beautiful country into an exact replica of Iraq. He won’t change it, he’ll make it worse. McCain is who you need to vote for, if you want to keep our freedom. Isn’t that what you want? Election day is still only 2 days away, you can still vote for the right person, and that’s McCain. I want our country to be better, not worse. You don’t have to help our country, but I want to. I have nightmares about Obama winning and McCain losing, but I just might have to suffer. Please, don’t vote for that scary man. I’m a 9{almost 10} year old kid, but I know what’s right, who knows, I might run for president one day.

I used to love it when Roy Romer was governor of Colorado, because occasionally his last name (short on vowels, but good consonants) would show up in a Times crossword, and since we share a last name, I used to scratch out the clue and write something good about myself instead, and then pass it along to my boyfriend, Mother, or boss. “Most beautiful woman in the world.” “Your baby girl.” “Your smartest employee.”

Hear hear for Barack Obama being a better crossword name than John McCain. Just like his presidency Obama will be in all kinds of crossword levels while if McCain gets only the expert ones.
