Groundhog Day, a custom introduced by German immigrants in Pennsylvania, is celebrated every February 2nd in the United States and Canada. But, few North Americans are aware of the Christian and Pagan Origins of Groundhog Day.

Among Catholics, February 2nd is celebrated as Candlemas, or the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. Because February 2nd marks the halfway point between the winter solstice and spring equinox, it is thought that the weather this day brings is an indicator of the weather that is to come. A popular English saying goes

If Candlemas be fair and bright,
Winter has another flight.
If Candlemas brings clouds and rain,
Winter will not come again.

In France, February 2nd is known as le Chandeleur. It is said that eating pancakes on this day will bring good fortune throughout the year.

In celebration of Groundhog Day, Candlemas or whatever you wish to call it, here's a free word search puzzle in extra-large print. Play it on your computer or print and solve on paper. Happy puzzling!
