Solution grid

The Salient (Salacious?) Clues

Here are the clues for the twelve themed entries.

Tote a narrow opening?
CARRY FISSURE

Ruins a good book?
WRECKS READ

Onion made of a sturdy cotton fabric?
JEAN SHALLOT

Bookie?
BET MIDDLER

Stealin' from a bloodsucker?
ROBIN LEECH

Satiate a ghost?
FILL SPECTER

Terse crackling sound?
CURT RUSTLE

Vacation by a pier?
DOCK HOLIDAY

Praying actions cause ennui?
KNEELS BORE

GYM NEIGHBORS

Puts gems on a flute player?
JEWELS FIFER

Scratched-up leather straps?
CLAWED REINS

Scanning the remainder of the clues, I don't see anything overtly suggestive. How about 61 Across: Carrot, e.g. (ROOT)
or the author's name: Peter Gordon. That's an obvious provocation isn't it?

In my opinion, those people who take offense at this puzzle or read anything into it are 43 Down: Numbskulls (BOZOS).
