First Crossword Puzzle

Commemorative Stamp

I recently acquired this beautiful piece of crossword memorabilia. As part of the US Postal Service's, "Celebrate the Century" series, this "First Day of Issue" was released on January 3, 1998, and commemorates the first crossword puzzle which debuted in the December 21, 1913 edition of the New York World.

The inventor of the crossword puzzle was Arthur Wynne, the editor of the World's Sunday supplement. He wanted to feature something different in the pre-Christmas edition. The game was a great success and gave rise to an international craze. Today, the crossword puzzle is considered the most popular word game of all time and appears in many languages around the world.
