| Nancy Salomon helps puzzle constructors |
She would probably ban the clue and the answer from any crossword puzzle she created, but a correct response to "saved by crosswords," might be "Nancy Salomon". Disabled by a bad back that still limits her activities, she started constructing the puzzles in the 1990s as something to do to pass the time.
She has since had enviable success as a puzzle constructor and as a volunteer mentor of would-be constructors. "It's opened up a whole new world for me," says Salomon of her crosswording. "... It's given a direction and purpose to my life. It's given me a wide circle of friends." One of those friends is Will Shortz, the crossword puzzle editor for The New York Times.
