Japanese Puzzle Boxes
Himitsu-Bako is a Japanese term meaning "Personal Secret Box" which is typically a wooden puzzle box which requires a number of manipulations in order to be 'unlocked'. It is a traditional handicraft originating in the area surrounding the Japanese city of Hakone in the early 18th century. Today these puzzles are still made by master craftsmen using ingenuity and joinery skills passed on from one generation to the next. They are decorated with fine wood parquetry and are considered not only intriguing puzzles but also beautiful works of art.
