Albuquerque, founded in 1706 as a Spanish colonial outpost, retains much of its cultural and historical heritage to this day. Originally a farming community and strategically located military
outpost, the town of Alburquerque (with an 'r') was built in the traditional Spanish style: a central plaza surrounded by government buildings, church, etc. This historic area has has
been preserved and is referred to as "Old Town Albuquerque" ('r' was dropped in the 19th century).
