Definition: A cryptic crossword or cryptic is a puzzle in which the answer words are deduced by solving the clues and each clue must adhere to a certain set of conventions. These puzzles use a lattice-style grid such as the one shown on the right.
Unlike the standard North American-style crossword puzzles, the grids used in a cryptic crossword may have up to half the squares unchecked.
The clues used in a cryptic crossword consist of two parts and use wordplay such as anagrams, charades, container words, reversals, deletions, double definitions, hidden words or &lits.
