About GAMES Magazine Crosswords:
GAMES looks for crossword puzzles with fresh, original themes and interesting, yet familiar, words and phrases that are clued in a lively, entertaining manner. We welcome queries on novel ideas for crosswords or crossword variations.
Crossword Puzzle Sizes and Specifications:
- 15 X 15, maximum word count of 78, preferably fewer than 38 black squares.
- 17 X 17, maximum word count of 98, preferably fewer than 50 black squares.
- 21 X 21, maximum word count of 140, preferably fewer than 74 black squares.
Rights and Payments:
- 15 X 15: $50
- 17 X 17: $100
- 21 X 21: $200
Traditional Rules:
- Crosswords should have an open, symmetric pattern with all-over interlock.
- No unchecked letters (i.e., a letter must form part of both an Across and Down entry).
- No two-letter words.
- No words repeated in the diagram.
- No offensive words, and no words suggesting death or disease.
- A minimum of abbreviations and cliché words.
Things to Avoid:
- Contrived phrases such as "A banana" unless you can provide a context (i.e. a title, quote, or familiar saying).
- Variant spellings and unfamiliar abbreviations.
Acceptable Words:
Brand names are fine, and topical, current entries like "J-Lo" are encouraged. If you are in doubt about the political correctness of an entry, err on the side of caution.
How to Submit Your Crossword Puzzle:
By Post: Send numbered, filled-in grid, listing each answer to the right of the clue. Include your name and address and a suggested title. Address your entry to:
