Today in History: Febuary 2

February 2nd is the Feast of Candlemas, a Christian holiday commemorating the purification of the Virgin Mary and the presentation of the infant Jesus in the Temple. In the British Isles, it was believed that bears and wolves emerged from hibernation on Candlemas Day to examine the weather. If they returned to their lairs, winter would continue for six more weeks. In North America, this superstition eventually evolved into Groundhog Day.
