1564: Galileo Galilei, Italian physicist, astronomer, astrologer, and philosopher, is born.
1764: St. Louis, Missouri, was founded by French fur trader Pierre Laclède.
1898: The USS Maine, a U.S. battleship stationed in Havana Harbor, blew up for unknown reasons, eventually leading to the Spanish-American War.
1965: The Maple Leaf Flag, the new national flag of Canada, was raised for the first time.
